One Winner and Loser from the 2022 NFL Free Agency

Now that the 2022 season has completed and the 2023 NFL Free Agency is underway, let’s look back to see the biggest winner and loser from last year’s free agency.

Biggest Winner: Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles made key additions in 2022 to help them be the most complete roster in the NFL. The Eagles traded the 18th overall pick along with a third-round pick in 2022 to the Tennessee Titans for wide receiver AJ Brown. The Eagles then signed AJ Brown to a four-year, $100 million contract extension with $57 million guaranteed. Brown would then go on to have his best season, grabbing 88 receptions, with a total of 1,496 yards, and 11 touchdowns.

The Eagles also signed cornerback James Bradberry and safety CJ Gardner-Johnson. Bradberry had 39 tackles, 17 passes deflected, and three interceptions. Gardner-Johnson has 61 tackles, eight passes deflected, and six interceptions, despite missing seven games.

Finally, the Eagles went out and signed linebacker Haason Reddick to a three-year, $45 million deal. Reddick would go on to have his best season yet, tallying up 35 tackles, 16 sacks, while also forcing five fumbles.

Biggest Loser: Denver Broncos

Every week that went by, it seemed the Russell Wilson trade got worse. Denver traded for the star quarterback on Mar. 8, 2022, in exchange for two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, and defensive tackle Shelby Harris. The Broncos also got a fourth-round pick. Denver then immediately signed Wilson to a five-year deal worth over $240 million, including a $50 million signing bonus and $161 million guaranteed. Wilson would go on to have his worst season yet. Wilson threw for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also fumbled six times and had a completion percentage below 60. The Broncos hired Sean Payton to be their next head coach to get a spark in the offense and Wilson.

The Broncos also signed defensive end Randy Gregory in 2022 to a five-year deal worth $70 million. This deal can have some potential to be great, but it is not looking good right now. Gregory only played in six games during the 2022 season. In those six games, Gregory had seven tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles.
