Day 1 Takeways From the NFL Draft; Eagles Making Big Moves

Day 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft has finally concluded. Let’s look at some notable picks from the first-round.

Players in Kansas City who have not been selected include Kentucky QB Will Levis, Penn State CB Joey Porter JR., Alabama S Brian Branch, and Georgia Tech DL Keion White.

Eagles Strike Big

The Philadelphia Eagles are currently the biggest winners of the NFL Draft and are looking to run it back to the Super Bowl. The Eagles drafted Georgia players Jalen Carter, and Nolan Smith at picks No. 9 and 30, respectively. The Eagle’s defensive line consists of Smith, Carter, Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Jordan Davis, and Milton Williams.

Three teams draft their franchise QB

The Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young out of Alabama with the No. 1 overall pick.

The Houston Texans drafted Ohio State’s CJ Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick. The Texans stayed on the clock and traded to third overall with the Arizona Cardinals. The Texans selected EDGE Will Anderson JR. of Alabama.

The Indianapolis Colts chose Anthony Richardson over Levis at No. 4. New head coach Shane Steichen coached Jalen Hurts when he was with the Eagles and now he gets to coach Richardson.

Two RBs go in the top 20

The Atlanta Falcons selected Bijan Robinson out of Texas Tech at No. 8. The Detroit Lions drafted Jahmyr Gibbs of Alabama with the No. 12 pick. No running back has been drafted in the top 20 since Saquon Barkley in 2018 (No. 2).

Patriots Steal Gonzalez

No one expected Oregon CB Christian Gonzalez to be available at No. 17. The New England Patriots took advantage and bolstered that secondary.

Jerry’s Questionable Selection

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys selected DL Mazi Smith of Michigan #26 overall. Not a bad pick because the Cowboys really needed a defensive tackle, but there were players like Nolan Smith and Joey Porter still on the board. Jerry does seem to make weird picks and the players turn out well. Time will tell.
