The Best Head Coach in Each Division (AFC)

AFC EAST: Bill Belichick; New England Patriots

The best division in terms of head coaches and Bill Belichick remains at the top. Everyone thought Belichick would be nothing without Tom Brady. He proved them wrong. He had New England back in the playoffs in 2021 with rookie quarterback Mac Jones at the helm. The Patriots were also only one game away from a postseason birth in 2022. Belichick can make questionable decisions like having Matt Patricia and Joe Judge run the offense last year. It’s safe to say that did not work out. Patricia is now out and Bill O’ Brien is in as the offensive playcaller. In his career, Belichick is a six-time Super Bowl champion, a three-time Coach of the Year, and has a record of 298-152.

AFC NORTH: Mike Tomlin; Pittsburgh Steelers

The biggest argument I hear for Tomlin is that he’s never had a losing season in his coaching career. That stat can be overused at times but it is nice to be consistent. The playoff success can be a bit concerning. Since their Super Bowl loss in 2010, the Steelers a are 3-7 in the postseason. It is impressive to make the playoffs when you have Ben Roethlisberger averaging 6.2 yards per pass attempt and Mason Rudolph and “Duck” Hodges at quarterback. Tomlin has lead the Steelers to the postseason a total of 10 times, won seven AFC North titles, and one Super Bowl victory.

  2. Zac Taylor (Cincinnati Bengals)
  3. Kevin Stefanski (Cleveland Browns)

AFC WEST: Andy Reid; Kansas City Chiefs

In my opinion, Reid is the best head coach in the NFL. He furthered his case by winning Super Bowl 57. Before Patrick Mahomes came along, Reid reached five conference championships and made the playoffs 13 times in 19 years. Reid is an offensive genius and good at executing. In the past ten seasons, Reid has captured 11 wins in eight of them. With two Super Bowl victories, a .641 career winning percentage (247-138-1), and 100 career victories with two separate franchises, Reid continues to build his Hall-of-Fame resume.

REST OF THE DIVISION RANKINGS

  1. Sean Payton (Denver Broncos)
  2. Brandon Staley (Los Angeles Chargers)
  3. Josh McDaniels (Las Vegas Raiders)

AFC SOUTH: Mike Vrabel; Tennessee Titans

Mike Vrabel and Doug Pederson could go either way. Vrabel did more with what he had. There was a ton of roster issues with the Titans last year and he had them at a 7-3 record. However, a second half season collapse caused the Titans to miss the playoffs. Vrabel has overachieved in the playoffs. He’s beaten Tom Brady and the Patriots, and knocked off the No. 1 seeded Baltimore Ravens in the 2019 season. Star runningback Derrick Henry was injured for the second half of the 2021-22 season and Vrabel still managed to grab the No. 1 seed and, in doing so, earned himself Coach of the Year. General manager Jon Robinson was fired in December, giving Vrabel more power and more pressure to turn this team around.

  2. DeMeco Ryans (Houston Texans)
  3. Shane Steichen (Indianapolis Colts)
