Reviewing Chris Simms’ Top 40 QB Countdown

Recently, Chris Simms finished his annual “Top 40 QB Countdown.” In this article, I will be reviewing his rankings and give my opinion on what I agree and disagree with.

I’ll be honest this list is not great. I agree on No. 1-8. Those are the top eight quarterbacks in the league. Maybe in a different order than I would have them, but it’s good. Many people may disagree but Matthew Stafford has turned into one of the most underrated quarterbacks. Having him at No. 10 is completely fine.

There are four things on this list that I disagree with.

4. Stidham at 32

Having Jarrett Stidham ranked 32 is crazy to me. You can make the case that all the players below him deserve to be ranked above him. Especially the bottom five. Stidham has been a backup for the majority of his career. Ridder has started a few games and has shown flashes, and Howell has started one game and played very well. Now, having Anthony Richardson, CJ Stroud, and Bryce Young below Stidham is shocking. I know those three have not played a single snap in the NFL yet but all three of them were drafted in the top four for a reason. I know people don’t like to rank rookies but those three will clearly be better than Stidham.

3. Mac Jones above Tua

The year is 2023, not 2021. Jones was clearly better than Tua back then, but now, it’s not a competition. Jones did lead the Patriots to the playoffs his rookie year but since then, he has not done much. Not to mention the Bills blew the Patriots out 47-17 in that playoff game. In 2022, Jones played 14 games and finished with 2,997 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also had a QBR of 36.1, ranked 28 in the league. Tua played one less game than Jones and had 3,548 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and posted a QBR of 68.8 (ranked 3 in NFL).

2. Kyler Murray ranked at No. 19

Like Stafford, Murray has turned into one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the league. Murray was an MVP candidate not that long ago and now he has one season where he was the entire offense due to injuries, and he apparently sucks. He is not near the level of the top eight on this list but he is definitely a top 9-13 quarterback. Murray is an elite rusher with a good deep ball, and good accuracy. Putting guys like Daniel Jones, Kirk Cousins, or even Jared Goff ahead of him is disrespectful.

1. Daniel Jones ranked at No. 11

Daniel Jones has become overrated for reasons like this. I already discussed Kyler Murray so I will not go over that again. But having Kirk Cousins and Dak Prescott below him is crazy. It is fair to say that Prescott’s 2022 season was not the best, to his standards. He had 2,860 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions in 12 games. In 2022, Jones had 3,205 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and just five interceptions in 16 games. A season with Jones’ stats from Prescott, would be his worst season if he started all 17 games. Jones had seven rushing touchdowns last year and adding that to his total touchdowns still has him at 22, behind Prescott, who played four less games. 2022 was also the second time Jones had more than 3,000 yards. Prescott has never had below 3,300 when he’s started all the games in the regular season.
