That Time Martin Truex JR. Dominated at Charlotte

On May 29, 2016, the NASCAR Cup Series was at Charlotte Motor Speedway for their annual Coca-Cola 600 event. Furniture Row Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. was hungry for a win after leading the most laps (131) during last year’s event and failing to come out with a victory. And did he deliver.

Truex dominated the whole race. He parked his No. 78 in victory lane, led 392 of the 400 laps and set a NASCAR record for the most miles led in a single race with 588/600. He passed Jim Paschal’s mark of leading 335 laps at Charlotte in 1967 to win.

Truex was passed by seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson for the lead with 55 laps to go, but Truex quickly took the lead away and did not look back. Kevin Harvick, who won at Charlotte in 2011 and 2013, passed Johnson for second place with 44 to go, but could not come close to Truex to make a pass for the win. This was Truex’s fourth overall win in the Cup Series.
